This painting conveys more than what is seen . . . it speaks about what is remembered. Although the scene appears deceptively calm, the horses are shaggy and wind-blown.They gaze pensively toward the sea, where the broken mast of a wrecked ship cuts the horizon.Bleached wood litters the beach, grim reminders of treacherous currents and deadly sand traps that have lured mariners and ships to their doom.
